Dear All,
We seem to be at a cross-roads, where the British people as a whole seem very unhappy that we have been denied a referendum on our increasing involvement with Europe (and its subsequent interference with our laws and customs, which have taken over 1,000 years to evolve), by the current government, yet at the same time, we seem unable to do anything concrete about it. Why?
Is it because we are displaying the typical British phobia of "making a fuss"? Are we too lazy to do it? Or are we scared that the current survelillance society is turning us into a police state and we fear to 'raise our heads above the parapet'?
Gordon Brown and his lackeys, having mortgaged our nation state, have actually promised a referendum, yet each time they come to the jump, they shy away. This situation is now worse, as there is perhaps a Labour perception, that the subject may rebound on any snap election!
As a person, I like Europe as much as the next man, or woman. I speak five european languages and I holiday there - but I LIVE in Britain - it is my home - therefore I do not take kindly to someone who does not live in my home, making far-reaching decisions on matters that affect me, without my knowledge or agreement. And boy, do they seem to like doing that, in Brussels! It's like the Titanic - unstoppable - until you hit an iceberg that is...
I would like to suggest that a specific petition is raised on the Downing Street website, urging the current goverment (and any that follows it) to get off the fence and hold a proper, democratic referendum, which effectively gives people the choice to say:
a. I wish the British to play a full part in Europe - yes or no
b. As above and we should subsume our national priorities in favour of a fully united and integrated Europe - yes or no
c. Such a group should have a 'constitution' (or by any other name), which is binding in law for all member states - yes or no
d. I wish Britain to stand back from Europe, being part of the common market, but retaining the right to defend itself and to govern itself, under British law - yes or no
e. Bearing in mind (d) above, all affected treaties should be suitably re-negotiated - yes or no.
Come on everyone, get off the fence!
